Beneficiaries : 50000 children

Context : Calcutta is home to 14 million people and is suffering from a demographic explosion. Around 40 % of children who are old enough to go to school have nevertheless never been and 20% of 5 to 14 year olds are forced into labour.

Action :

  • Prevention et protection through education : Schooling of children, creation of centres for learning to read and write, general education for street children in urban areas, organisation of cross-border awareness campaigns
  • Financial and psychosocial rehabilitation of children: Creation of centres, recruitment of psychologist-advisors for partner organisations, vocational training for vulnerable teenagers, advanced schooling for young victims, funds for revolving credit and help for micro-entrepreneurs.
  • Networking and training for partners.

This programme has been budgeted for 3 years. The total budget amounts to € 2,116,000. In 2006, Okworld has funded € 30,000.  

Project life

4 partners work on this project with Groupe Développement. Our partner: Don Bosco Ashalayam, in Calcutta, renowned for his work on protecting and rehabilitating street children through his network of support centres, informal schools, health centres located on the streets and emergency telephone lines that are free of charge.

Currently, this project impact on numerous persons :

  • More than 50 000 children will directly benefit from the educative and professional training project, support centres and micro-loans.
  • 10 Million people will indirectly benefit from public awareness campaigns.
  • Around 1 600 000 people will directly benefit from campaigns focussed on trafficking in children carried out by local organisations.
  • More than 5 000 adults from NGOs, governmental bodies and local communities will be trained.seront formées.
