Antananarivo

Action in cooperation with Interaide

Project presentation

Beneficiaries : 4000 children

Context : The poor areas of Antananarivo are developing quickly. However, the children of the most underprivileged families have less chance of taking advantage of the opportunities to develop that present themselves. They are often left to fend for themselves and lack support from their parents, not getting enough love, and not having the opportunity to express themselves, read or play.

Action :

  • Early Learning : play groups and creativity workshops with their parents
  • Pre-schooling for children aged between 4 and 6 years old : supporting semi-independent nursery classes
  • Extra tuition : extra lessons in small groups given by the teachers in the schools themselves.

Financial data :
The estimated 2006 budget is € 152,600. For 2006, Okworld has donated € 25,000.

Project life

January 2007 : Based on the latest letters from the Interaide Programme Leaders

Early Learning
The Manarintsoa centre has come of age. The new Programme Leader, works with the local team to develop it even more, by organising outings for the children, and through greater work cooperation with social players in the area.

Nursery schools
The two month school holidays were devoted to promoting schooling: shows, open days, and even training 220 mothers to help them manage their family budget better, brought together several thousand people from different areas. In September, despite a fair share of tears, as in all nursery schools, classes resumed smoothly, with two new nursery schools opening, and a total of 1600 children enrolled in the thirteen nursery schools supported.

The extra tuition developed for almost 3000 pupils in 12 state primary schools, the focus has been put on subscriptions from parents. This year, six of the twelve agreements will be renewed with state schools. There is a problem with the neighbourhood school that provides 400 pupils with extra tuition (!); and where three classrooms are closed because the building around them is in a poor state (…). We are trying to find a solution with the Ministry, the area education office and the local council.
