What is an N.G.O. ?

N.G.O. stands for Non Governmental Organisation. Most NGOs operate under the status of non-profit making associations (association loi 1901) and work for social causes (generally in three main domains : International solidarity, human rights and the environment), with an international dimension.

The main criteria defining NGOs are as follows :

  • The fact that organisations must be private,
  • They must not make profit,
  • Financial independence,
  • Political independence,
  • The notion of benefits for the general public,
  • The fact of working as a network.
